Growing Up In The Shadow of the Holocaust

Presenter: Sheldon "Shelly" Bleiweiss

Shelly will share his parents stories of surviving independently in the open using fake identities, how they met and fell in love, and what it was like for him growing up with parents suffering from PTSD.

Bio:  A child of two Polish Holocaust survivors Shelly Bleiweiss grew up in Houston, Texas, the oldest of three children.   A retired clinical social worker, Shelly has been teaching about the Holocaust since 2000.  Before moving to North Carolina, Shelly was a docent at Holocaust Museum Houston.

In 2002, Shelly was one of the mental health counselors accompanying several thousand Jewish high school students on the week-long “March of the Living” trip to Poland as they explored the remnants of Jewish life there and toured some of the death camps.

In 2004, Shelly was selected by the International School of Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel, to participate in a two-week seminar for Jewish educators on “Teaching the Holocaust”.

Since moving to North Carolina in 2014, Shelly has traveled throughout the State, talking to teachers, hundreds of school students, and numerous church/community/civic groups.  He teaches courses on the Holocaust, and on Anti-Semitism, to senior adults through continuing education programs at NC State, Duke, U of Pittsburgh, and the Granville County Senior Center.  He has been the featured speaker at several community Holocaust Commemoration ceremonies.

Shelly is a member of the North Carolina State Council on the Holocaust, and the Holocaust Speakers Bureau of North Carolina.
