Preserving Jewish cemeteries in Poland is a particular challenge given the devastation. There are some 1200 "abandoned" or devastated Polish Jewish cemeteries. Since our last lAJGS panel on this topic back in 2018, devoted volunteers and professionals in Poland and from worldwide have been making significant progress. What can each of us, as genealogists and devotees of Jewish heritage, do to be a meaningful part of this effort? This answer is, "a lot.

Come hear how to use genealogical resources and learn how to be a successful part of this effort. It will do for wonders for your ancestors and your descendants!

Bio: Jeri Ann Karlsberg is a retired psychotherapist originally from Buffalo, NY, who has been living in California since 1977. Her participation in the JewishGen Neshama trip in 2023 was a life-changing experience for her. She discovered a newfound commitment to making a difference in the preservation of Jewish history and heritage in Poland and subsequently volunteered for Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland to serve as a consultant and JewishGen to assist with heritage travel programs. This past summer, she took part in two JewishGen trips to Poland and after studying she became knowledgeable in the proper methods for cleaning matzevot. Her teaching and leading students and adults in cleaning matzevot this summer was surely a highlight of both trips.
